AWS Certified AI Practitioner Exam: Tips & Tricks from Recent Passers

Are you considering taking the AWS Certified AI Practitioner exam? As artificial intelligence continues to reshape the world we live in, this certification is becoming increasingly valuable for anyone looking to validate their AI and machine learning knowledge in the AWS ecosystem.

Our first cohort of Mission team members recently tackled and passed this exam, and we're excited to share our team’s experiences, insights, and tips to help you prepare effectively.

What is the AWS Certified AI Practitioner Certification?

The AWS Certified AI Practitioner is a foundational-level certification that validates your understanding of AI, machine learning, and generative AI concepts and use cases on AWS. It's designed for anyone who is familiar with AI/ML technologies on AWS but don't necessarily build solutions using them.

The exam lasts 120 minutes and consists of 85 questions. Currently, it's offered in English and Japanese, with more languages planned for late 2024. The beta exam is priced at $75 USD, making it an accessible option for many professionals looking to upskill in AI.

"Getting this cert is like giving your brain a turbo boost for understanding AI and getting access to the behind-the-scenes content. Whether you're in tech or business, it makes you feel like you've unlocked a new superpower. Plus, who doesn't like to casually drop some AI facts in conversations?"

– Caio R., Manager, Customer Engagement @ Mission

Who Should Take This Exam?

This certification is ideal for quite a range of professionals, including business analysts, IT support professionals, marketing professionals, product or project managers, line-of-business or IT managers, and sales professionals.

On the Mission team, we’ve had team members from all different departments gain their AI practitioner certification. From cloud analysts, cloud solution architects, customer engagement managers, and more, this certification is accessible and valuable to a wide range of job roles.

“I think the AWS AI Practitioner exam is designed to provide individuals with foundational knowledge of AI and machine learning services in AWS. I believe its a valuable cert for anyone looking to break into AI, offering a practical understanding of AWS tools that are shaping the future of innovation and businesses.”

– Mike B., Cloud Analyst @ Mission

If you're looking to gain a competitive edge in the AI space or position yourself for career growth, this certification could be a valuable addition to your skillset.

Our Team's Experience: What to Expect

After taking the exam, our team members shared their thoughts on the content and difficulty level. The exam emphasizes understanding the thought process behind using AI models, considerations for implementation, and real-world use cases. It's less about memorizing AWS services and more about applying AI concepts to business scenarios.

A crucial aspect is distinguishing between the different levels of AI, machine learning, deep learning, and generative AI. While not the primary focus, familiarity with AWS AI services like Amazon Macie, Kendra, SageMaker, Comprehend, and Rekognition is helpful.

Understanding key machine learning fundamentals is crucial. This includes evaluation metrics such as F1 score, MAE, MSE, RMSE, and R-squared. Knowledge of training models like BERT, GPT, DALL-E, and Wave2Vec is also important. The exam covers different types of learning, including supervised, semi-supervised, and unsupervised approaches.

A significant portion of the exam covers generative AI concepts and AWS Bedrock. Be prepared for questions about foundation models, prompt engineering, and addressing bias in AI outputs. Many questions present real-world scenarios where you need to choose the appropriate model, evaluation metric, or prompt engineering technique.

Contrary to expectations, our team found relatively few questions specifically about Amazon SageMaker. However, understanding its role in the AWS AI/ML ecosystem is still valuable.

Tips for Success

Based on our team's experience, we recommend focusing on AI/ML concepts, particularly the differences between AI, ML, deep learning, and generative AI. Mastering AWS Bedrock and generative AI topics is crucial, as these are featured heavily in the exam. Understand the foundation models available and their use cases.

Familiarize yourself with effective prompt engineering techniques for various scenarios. Know when and how to use different evaluation metrics for machine learning models. Learn about tools like Partial Dependence Plots (PDP) for explaining model behavior to non-technical stakeholders.

While the actual exam questions may differ in style from practice exams, they can help you identify knowledge gaps. Take advantage of the official AWS Certified AI Practitioner Question Set available on AWS Skill Builder.

“My top tip for success is to blend learning the AWS AI Practitioner exam's domain concepts from a content engine you enjoy with answering practice questions to understand how you will be tested. In that process, identify proactively the knowledge gaps you need to spend most of your time on. This way, you will efficiently solidify a baseline level of knowledge needed to address common AI and ML topics and challenges, and pass the exam with confidence.”

Iman N., Sr. Cloud Solutions Architect @ Mission

Recommended Resources

Our team found several resources particularly helpful in their exam preparation:

  1. Udemy Course by Stephane Maarek: This comprehensive course, along with its practice exams, was highly recommended by our team members for its thorough coverage of exam topics.

  2. AWS Skill Builder: The official AWS learning platform offers an Exam Prep course and a 20-question Official Question Set for the AI Practitioner exam. These resources incorporate new question types you can expect to see on the exam.

  3. MLU-Explain Blog (https://mlu-explain.github.io/): Our team found this blog excellent for explaining machine learning concepts in an accessible way.

  4. AWS Documentation: Familiarize yourself with the official AWS documentation for AI and ML services, particularly AWS Bedrock and Amazon SageMaker.

Preparing for the Exam

AWS offers a structured approach to exam preparation. Start by reviewing the exam guide thoroughly. Refresh your AWS knowledge through digital courses and hands-on practice with AWS Builder Labs, AWS Cloud Quest, and AWS Jam. Take an Exam Prep course on AWS Skill Builder, and assess your readiness with the AWS Certification Official Pretest.

“If someone dedicated an average of 60 minutes on a daily basis (not counting weekends), one with 0 knowledge in AI can pass this exam in 3 weeks. The course content from Stephan takes a total of 10 hrs. But if you are like me and like to take it slow and complement with AWS recordings provided by AWS instructors then in 3 weeks to a month is just about perfect.”
